Artist-In-Residence – Paula Lovo hosts Tardeadas

Paula Lovo hosts Tardeadas!

Tardeadas are a family-friendly, free afternoon dance party highlighting genres from Latin America (cumbia, danzon, salsa, etc. ). Inspired by the “tardeadas” from Mexico, this is a space to gather.

The Tardeadas hosted by Paula Lovo are part of her Arts@ Large’s Winter 2024 Artist-in-Resideny, “A Familiar Place – Un lugar para cine, charlas, y convivio!”

A Familiar Place is an exploration of the spaces we find intimate and joyful. It can be a friend’s backyard, your grandma’s kitchen, a placita, and cinema at the same time. It’s a place to gather in conversation and learn from one another. Inspired by my own internal research on shared experiences, family origins, and how to preserve the different characters that make up a community, A familiar place is a spot where you can feel at home. With music, dance, film, and collaboration- there is an opportunity for all to find joy in the bitter winter.

Paula Lovo is an artist, educator, and film programmer from the Southside of Milwaukee.

Her work delves into intergenerational relationships and all its complexities, spaces that create community and those who build it, folklore, and memories. She primarily works in writing and film/video to capture her stories and is inspired heavily by the women in her family. Working towards creating accessible art spaces, she helps program low-cost, all-ages, multilingual film programming.Paula invites both English and Spanish speakers into the process of co-creating art with her during the three-month residency program.

As part of her residency, Lovo will create work in the Arts @ Large gallery and share her process with local students during field trips and with the general public during Master Classes and a Community Conversation. Details of the public programs will be announced on the Arts @ Large website and social media in the coming weeks.

Arts @ Large’s Artist-in-Residency programming is made possible thanks to Ruth Foundation for the Arts
